Right after Mario and Luigi saved Mushroom World in Super Mario Bros. 3, before the events of Super Mario Bros. X-2: Invasion of Sea Side, the Sea Side King really admired the Mario Bros. and made statues of them. He proclaimed them as Heroes of Mushroom World.

For many days, he's been dreaming about the Mario Bros. saving King Varun from the tomboyish Koopa Princess--just until the beginning of Super Mario Bros. X-2: Invasion of Sea Side.
